Ohride Lake ABOUT

One of the most beautiful gifts of nature in Europe is Lake Ohrid and its environs.

It is enough to just look how calmly it is spread out in the distance, to hear the splashing of waves, to look into the boundless blue to fall in love with it forever. The age of Lake Ohrid is estimated to be from 4 to 10 million years, it is the oldest lake in our continent. Its area is 358 km2. It is striking in its size, so that at first glance you can even take it over the sea. The lake is fed by underwater keys and springs located along the eastern and southern shores, so its waters are incredibly transparent even at a depth of 22 meters.

Most of the surface springs are located near the monastery of St. Naum, and in the immediate vicinity of the city of Ohrid is located one of the most popular sources - Studenchishta, better known as Bilyaniny springs. The lake is home to over 200 species of endemic organisms, some of which have remained unchanged since the Tertiary period.

These are four types of sponges, the most famous of which is an endemic spherical sponge, relict species of freshwater snails (prudoviks) and algae. One of the most specific plants is the underwater hara plant. The city itself and the lake are protected by UNESCO as a natural and cultural heritage. Lake Ohrid is the largest sports ground in Macedonia.
It is an ideal venue for swimming and sailing competitions. Regattas are one of the oldest sports on the lake, and the first sailboat was built here back in 1940. Make friends with the wind and let it carry you along the waves of one of the oldest and most beautiful lakes in the world!
